Suicide Prevention Conference Breakout Session Highlights

Aldea's 3rd Annual Suicide Prevention and Awareness Conference Breakout Session Highlights presents the following: Steve & Michelle Kiefer with A Family’s Journey with Mental Health. During their workshop, the Kiefer’s will be transparently sharing their personal journey parenting two of their children, Dale and Lily, through battles with mental illness. Nancy Tamarisk. QPR Gatekeeper Training is a nationally-known research-based suicide prevention method. During her workshop you'll learn to recognize the signs that a person may be at risk for suicide. John & Erika Brooks presented the story of their adopted daughter, Casey, who lost her life after jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. They will share what they have learned through the journey of adopting Casey and losing her to suicide. Jose Martinez Healing Through Art: An Expressive Art Activity “Becoming Butterflies” North Bay Artist Jose Martinez and Jessica Thomason will share how art has guided his life and facilitated experiences of healing and growth. Jessica Thomason will share the story of her sister, Kirsten Lee, an artist who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Kirsten did a series of mixed media paintings and a representation of her MRI scans that led her through a process of grief, acceptance and healing. Shantal Shamoiel. Trauma Competent Caregiver. The trauma experienced by children in foster care is often complex and can permanently affect the growth and development of a child. Graciela Rodriguez Garcia is a bilingual/bicultural Mental Health Counselor in the Child and Family Behavioral Health Services clinic at Napa County, Mental Health division. As a licensed therapist, she provides specialized mental health treatment to children ages 0-18 who are experiencing mental health symptoms related to anxiety, depression, trauma and suicidality. Identify Suicidal Behavior: PRESENTED IN SPANISH

Identify Suicidal Behavior: Addressing the needs of the individual and the family with psychoeducation. Suicidality is one of the scariest behaviors to see in an individual. It is important as family members, caregivers and social services providers to acknowledge that the struggle is real. in this workshop participants will learn and become familiar with key symptoms of suicidal behaviors. Understanding the symptoms of suicidal ideation, triggers, handling escalated behavior (a crisis) and post-hospitalization are essential. Sharon is a mental health clinician with Aldea Children & Family Services. She has experience working as a bilingual/bicultural provider to clients with acute level of symptoms; dealing with childhood sexual assault, ADHD, anxiety and depression previously serving the residents of Los Angeles County. In recent years, she has been the bilingual clinician for the SOAR Program at Aldea in Napa. Alex Ochoa- Recognizing the Signs & Symptoms of Substance Abuse

The Courage Village Suicide Prevention & Awareness Conference showcase Family Therapist Alex Ochoa conference video about recognizing the signs & symptoms of substance abuse. Talk Saves Lives (TM) - An Introduction to Suicide Prevention

Stan Collins has worked in the suicide prevention field for over 19 years. He has presented or provided training to over 650,000 adults and youth on the subject of suicide prevention including medical professionals, military, law enforcement, school staff and community members. In 2001, he testified before a United States Senate Subcommittee on the topic of youth suicide. Currently he is working as a consultant in the field, focusing on technical assistance in creation and implementation of suicide prevention curriculums and strategies. Stan is a former Lifeguard and Emergency Medical Technician with the City of San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. Stan is co-author of the Know the Signs Training Resource Guide for Suicide Prevention in Primary Care toolkit, and author of the San Diego County Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training for First Responders.
