Caring for Children, Adults and Families in Need

  Frequently Asked Questions:
  Q. Is there a need in my community for foster care?
  A. Yes! The world we live in today is very difficult for parents due to the increase of drugs, violence, mental health issues, and financial hardships. As a result, local children suffer every day from abuse, neglect, parental absence, and other family problems. These children need adults who will temporarily share their homes and families while their own families learn to heal. Homes are needed in every neighborhood so that children will not have to leave their school
and friends behind.
  Q. Who can become a foster parent?
  A. Good foster parents come in "all shapes and sizes". Homeowners and apartment renters. Single parents, domestic partners, married partners and parent/adult child teams. Parents with children living at home and "empty nesters". Working parents and "stay at home" parents. Experienced parents and first-time parents. The main requirement is that you care and are willing to learn.
  Q. How long will a foster child stay in our home?
  A. Some children may need to stay only a few days until a relative can be found. Other children will never be able to return to their birth families and need someone to raise them in a loving home. Many stay for about a year until they return home or are adopted. You will decide which placements work best for your family.
  Q. Won’t I become attached? How will I let go?
  A. You will become attached to the children in your care. However, foster parents find that helping children rejoin their family or become adopted is the best thing for them and that they enjoy being part of the process. Many foster parents stay involved in the child’s life long after the child leaves their home. Some foster parents adopt the child in their care.
  Q. Why should I become a foster parent with Aldea?
  A. We work very hard to create a supportive environment where foster families can thrive. We provide training, support groups, activities, events, and 24 hour assistance. We have been doing this for over 20 years and are well-regarded by the community and by our foster parents. In fact most of our referrals
come from them!
  Q. How do I become certified as an Aldea foster parent?
  A. Just give us a call and one of our staff will answer any questions, and walk you through the process. We offer pre-certification training and an individualized approach to certification. You can move at your own speed and we will help you decide what works best for you and your family.
  Q. Am I really needed?
  A. Absolutely! There is a national and local shortage of foster parents. Call today!
Q: Where do you have to live to become an Aldea foster parent?
A: Foster parents need to live no more than 2 hours from our Vallejo office. Our foster parents currently live in Napa, Solano, Alameda, Contra Costa,
and Lake Counties.
